THE BRP Jose Rizal represents a quantum leap for the Philippine Naval fleet and the enforcement of the country’s maritime claims in the West Philippine (South China) Sea.

Last Saturday marked the arrival of the Philippine Navy’s first-ever, brand-new missile frigate warship. Appropriately named after the country’s national hero, BRP Jose Rizal departed the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea last Monday, May 19, and arrived at Subic, Zambales on May 23, carrying with it 35,000 coronavirus test kits, 20,000 face masks, 180 barrels of disinfectant solution, 2,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and 300 packs of disinfectant wipes generously donated by the South Korean government and HHI.
