Illegal cigarette manufacturer shut down in Isabela

NAGUILIAN, Isabela: Police officers arrested five Koreans, a Chinese and a local resident for illegally manufacturing cigarettes at the Lucky J 888 Rice Mill in Palattao village here.

The police caught the production when the perpetrators tried to transport 649 sacks of cigarettes on Thursday evening.

Police Colonel James Cipriano, Isabela police director, identified the arrested Korean national as Xlu Zou Wu, 42, a trader and transient of Batal in Santiago City. His alleged cohort, Roger Aparilla, 40, truck driver of Barangay 24-A of Cagayan, Misamis Oriental, was also captured.

They will be indicted today for breaching the Intellectual Property Code (RA 8293), Customs Modernization Tariff Act and National Internal Revenue Code.

Seized were 649 sacks and boxes of assorted brand of undocumented cigarettes, a wingvan-type truck (CAZ-1548) registered under United Auctioneers, Inc. in Olongapo City, Zambales and assorted paraphernalia.

Police spotted the truck bound to the warehouse at a quarantine control point. When flagged down, the truck had yielded rice chaffs. However, when part of the rice chaffs were removed, sacks of cigarettes were uncovered.
