In an ideal world, nations do not let a crisis go to waste. A sense of national purpose is summoned from the crippling, paralyzing depths of the crisis, which at present is a lethal contagion. And, as a complementary initiative, much of the political vehemence — much of the national discord — is set aside to forge the national unity that is required to withstand that particular crisis. For how can a nation divided triumph over a crisis?
In our own specific setting, how can a nation with an underfunded health sector withstand the virus if we can’t even get our acts together and forge a united front?
