An innocent, almost obscure passage in my column article last Sunday, “Survey says: China most democratic,” had led to that statement. The passage reads: “The Manny V. Pangilinan-controlled Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has thought of slapping its power consumers with a concoction of billings that is utterly arbitrary and extremely unfair but which it is determined to implement nonetheless as a way to pass on to consumers the burden of its losses on account of Covid-19. Can the consumers complain? No, Meralco cites a law that it says authorizes it to charge those sky-high rates. I’ll get back to you, Meralco, on this issue, but settle this issue first about democracy.”

A guy named Jera proved his mettle at exquisite resourcefulness, perhaps even cunning, in tracing my email address and executed a coup de grace that got me hooked. He introduced himself as a son of my late friend Jess Sison, press secretary of President Fidel V. Ramos and former chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
