YES, we are in the longest lockdown and it is telling on the lives of all. Some in discomfort, some in dire need and some for the worst part. But the coronavirus is real and deadly. It is not flu or the common cold or a childhood disease that when one is afflicted and eventually recovers, it becomes a chapter of the past, a narrative of salvation. From what has been heard and acknowledged by medical personnel, it has long-term repercussions — from weak muscles to dimunition of voice strength (from intubation) to blood clots that can cause strokes and require amputations, as well as recurring mental effects like depression, early onset of dementia, inability to focus and a general weakening of health and energy in the aftermath. No one wants to be fearful, so there are those in unreasonable denial, who express it by defying the protocols. And the result is increasing cases and overwhelming pressure not only on medical personnel and facilities, but on society in general. If we were to remember biblical times, this is a chapter in the afflictions of mankind. So, it is time to be patient, to be careful, to reflect and to survive and, along the way to help others to do the same.

Among the afflictions referred to include our government’s recent actions. The House of Representatives has spent weeks using hectoring questions and unreasonable demands in the ABS-CBN Corp. franchise hearings. It is not a question of press freedom or responsibility that impels the circus of aggrieved legislators, but their pique at not being portrayed as they think they should or be given the esteem they think they deserve. It is their interests and their egos that are in the driver’s seat in these ridiculous, absurd and senseless exercise of vetting an application for franchise renewal of an entity with a track record that while not perfect (as nothing is) has paid its dues and given service to the public. Someone called for a “conscience” vote on the issue. Is there a chance of that in the present mix that we see in the Lower House?
