SEATTLE: The recent decision of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizing IQOS as a “modified risk tobacco product (MRTP)” acknowledged that the marketing of the product is “appropriate for the promotion of public health,” observers affirmed.

Issued last July 7, 2020, the FDA’s latest decision marked the first time the agency has granted MRTP marketing order for an innovative electronic alternative to cigarettes. The IQOS Tobacco Heating System includes the electronic IQOS device that generates a nicotine-containing aerosol by heating tobacco-filled sticks wrapped in paper (HeatSticks).
