The culminating event in the celebration of the National Maritime Week is dedicated to giving tribute to the Filipino seafarer. Yes, there are two calendar days earmarked for them, June 25 which is the International Seafarers Day, and the last Sunday of September as the National Seafarers’ Day according to the Presidential directive. The Philippines observes these two events as an expression of this archipelago’s grateful admiration to the Filipino seafarer.

Until the pandemic, the maritime industry has not received the attention it so deserved; thanks to the seafarers who are coming back by the hundreds, the industry is getting noticed. That the industry is indispensable to the archipelago glaringly surfaced as domestic and international trade are sustained by ships that connect the islands and the world.
