Amid the debate on the lopsided scores of the two judges, one of whom gave Vasyl Lomachenko only one round, there is no doubting the fact that Teofimo Lopez deserved to be the winner in their 12-round battle for the unified world lightweight championships.

Lopez, the underdog going in, clearly outworked the inexplicably passive Lomachenko. Make no mistake, Lomachenko has always been a slow starter, but nobody expected him to be turtle-slow against Lopez. By the time the fifth round was winding up, Lopez had already thrown around 175 punches while Lomachenko only had 40. Lomachenko’s passiveness was basically the reason why the first half of the contest was a bummer.
