HISTORICALLY, China has been the prime mover in the affairs of Southeast Asia (SEA), which the Chinese referred to as “Nanyang”, or the “southern seas.”

South Asians referred to SEA as the “land of gold” and the context lies with regional commerce. For insular SEA it was because of the spice trade (see “The sea as the focal point,” The Manila Times, Oct. 29, 2020), but for continental SEA, it was due to the immense China trade.
