CONGRATULATIONS to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. It is even more satisfying that Donald Trump lost to the oldest candidate, who was on his third try, and a woman and African and Asian American. It was around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in New York when Biden was declared the projected winner. I was on the Upper East Side; you could immediately hear people celebrating and cars blowing their horns as the celebrations continued and grew in many cities. As a memorable post went, “Live your life so that people around the world don’t celebrate and dance when you lose your job.” Other great comments include the following: “Trump was upset because for this first time, he was on the receiving end of an eviction notice.” (Bill Maher) That was one of the funniest lines I heard this week, along with Greta Thunberg retweeting Trump’s taunt back to him to “chill” and work on his anger management.

I hope this is my last column on the American election given it is a sideshow to us. I do want to quote my friend Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Than Nguyen, who is very liberal and had to deal with the older community of Vietnamese Americans who are very anti-communist and right-wing, so blindly for Trump. He asks for civility in the dialogue and so on but amusingly added he is happy the election is over so the community can go back to important topics like which “pho” is better, north or south? His view is south.
