THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is targeting to have 200 million trees planted in the country with the national greening program, its spokesman bared on Saturday.

According to DILG spokesman and Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya, the program is targeted to commence next year.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año ordered the support for the program from various agencies such as the Philippine National Police and the local government units (LGUs).

“Ang goal po nito ay makapagtanim tayo ng 200 million trees (The goal of this is to plant 200 million trees),” Malaya explained in the Laging Handa public briefing.

The DILG will release memorandum circulars and department orders to encourage tree planting nationwide, Malaya said.

“Para hikayatin ang malawakang tree planting in support of the national greening program (To urge the tree planting in wide scope in support of the national greening program),” he added.

Moreover, the program will be from the barangay level to the highest level of the LGUs, Malaya said.
