I have been to my share of concerts over the years, but I was not prepared for the uncommonly thick atmosphere inside the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday night. Even Lady Gaga herself did not elicit as much anticipation and raw energy as the nine men of New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys. Granted I have never been to a boy band show in my life, finding myself at a concert of not just one but two of the biggest boy bands on the planet took some getting used to.
The show began with two curtain raisers that were more painfully boring than excitement-enhancing. Mercifully, they were brief. At a few minutes past 9 p.m., the giant screens began showing the pictures and names of all nine performers. A giant white curtain fell down from the ceiling on three sides to cover a portion of the stage. Strategically placed lights illuminated the rear, casting their silhouettes against the curtain. By this time, the screams neared eardrum-shattering levels.
