Last Thursday, I saw a special screening of director Jay Abellos Pureza: The Story of Negros Sugar. The last film of his I saw was Nametsa light-hearted comedy, which danced about the Ilonggos passion for food. Pureza certainly lands itself at the other end of the spectrum; it is serious business.
Negrenses, who felt the story of Negros sugar should be told from a sober and intelligent perspective, approached Director Jay Abello several years ago with an offer to produce and fund Pureza. The final product is a well-researched and well-put together class in history and economics. It shows what initially drove families to Negros; it chronicles the lives of the sacadas; and alerts us to the Asean free trade scheme, which will open our doors to competitively priced sugar from other countries in 2015.
