The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that Earth’s global average surface temperature in 2020 was the warmest year on record since the late 19th century. It was revealed the briefing on Thursday (early Friday morning in the Philippines) during the 101st American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting.

According to the scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, with the continuing long-term warming trend of the planet, last year’s globally averaged temperature was 1.02 degrees Celsius (°C) warmer than the baseline 1951-1980 mean. While the year 2020 (1.02 °C) edged out the year 2016 (0.99 °C) by a very small amount, however, since it is within the margin of error of the analysis, both years –2020 and 2016 effectively tied for the warmest year on record.
