The local unit of Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced on Thursday it would close its Nissan Almera assembly plant in Laguna province in March, prompting the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to again call for safeguard measures to protect the local automotive industry.

In a statement, Nissan Philippines Inc. said it and assembly partner Univation Motor Philippines Inc. (UMPI) decided to shutter the facility in Laguna’s Santa Rosa City after their assembly contract expired.
