LAST week proved to be one sad episode in Philippine business. Makati Shangri-la and Nissan’s local production hub are closing its doors and laying off hundreds of regular and contractual workers to contain its bleeding reserves. The question that keeps running in my mind now is this — how did the two respectable organizations arrive at the decision?

Your guess is as good as mine. For one, I tried to inquire about this with some friends from Makati Shang and Nissan. It looks like they’re too timid to even talk about it. It’s either they don’t know the specifics or they would simply not talk about it. Let’s try to understand them. Whatever it is, I suppose their management lawyers did a lot of walking and talking in the process of arriving at the best decision.
