THE Philippine Red Cross (PRC) recently announced, through a press statement from PRC Chairman Richard Gordon, that the agency is now ready to conduct tests for Covid-19 using the patient’s saliva. The statement described this method as simpler and less costly than the usual swab test, which requires an extensive examination of the patient’s larynx.

I know of a mother who must sacrifice regular visits with her family for a year in order to keep her employment as a caregiver in one household. It so happens that the swab tests required of her to undergo at the expense of her employer is so expensive that it would cost a fortune if she were allowed to visit her folks numerous times; she is required to have a swab test every time she enters the premises of her employment from outside. The single swab test allowed her in a year, she avails every Christmas week so she can be with her loved ones during the traditional family yuletide reunion.
