United States Senate Minority Leader and Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell gave a speech that practically agreed with the main argument laid down by the impeachment managers from the House of Representative. Former president Donald Trump is directly responsible for the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6 that ended up killing five people and hurting hundreds. McConnell agreed that Trump betrayed his oath of office.
And yet, McConnell, together with 42 other Republican senators, voted against seven of his colleagues, who joined all the 50 Democrats who voted to convict. Short of the two-thirds majority required, Trump was acquitted of the single charge of incitement to insurrection, something which the House impeachment managers have factually established and to which McConnell agreed.
