A few days ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping proudly announced that the ambitious goal he had set upon taking office in 2012 — lifting 100 million people out of poverty — has been achieved. For a variety of reasons, the amount of skepticism with which announcements from the Chinese government are viewed is directly proportional to the size of the claim being made, so Xi’s news was not taken at face value. However, it certainly seems to be creditable in this case, although how much of the credit should actually be given to Xi and his government is debatable.
