While it was important for Smart to grant its subscribers’ wishes to connect them with their foreign idols as brand ambassadors, the telco’s latest Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin TVC just as valuably presented the day’s top Filipino band an opportunity to strut their stuff in the ad’s soundtrack and musical scoring.

Yes, it’s Ben&Ben singing another great original in the K-Drama superstars’ romantic sci-fi-themed commercial for Smart.

Ben&Ben performs ‘Inevitable,’ the song heard in the background of Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin’s (top photo) TVC.

Recalling how the young music geniuses figured in the project, Smart SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business Jane Basas said, “To help us tell the story more effectively, we were honored to have our very own multi-awarded folk-pop band Ben&Ben write and perform an original song called ‘Inevitable’ for the ad. This is our way of championing local talent and giving them a platform — and admit it, nobody does heartfelt, kilig songs better than our own OPM artists.”

Apparently, Ben&Ben’s members are also big fans of the Korean actors’ global hit series, “Crash Landing On You” (CLOY), so imagine their excitement when they learned about the project from their label, Sony Music.

Nevertheless, the single is based on real-life experiences according to lead singer Paolo Benjamin, “Inevitable is a song that tries to describe the nature of fate, and how all our actions somehow lead us to some better place that is destined for us. It’s also a song about being real with someone, and that no matter how scary that may seem at times, there is freedom in baring your truest nature with someone dear to you, even if that someone is yourself.”

Miguel Benjamin added, “The songwriting in itself presents a concept of the state that is both a surreal mystery and a peaceful certainty, so we wanted to create an aural representation of what these lyrics felt like. Our process started with a mix of acoustic guitars, which I tweaked with sitar effects as the main intro riff; kind of like a representation of the two contrasting feelings working together.”

The Hyun Bin-Son Ye Jin TVC, featuring Ben&Ben, is the new centerpieces of Smart 5G’s “Experience the power you never thought possible” campaign.
