“ON March sixteen, fifteen hundred twenty-one, when Philippines was discovered by Magellan….” Yoyoy Villame sang this ditty in 1972. Well, guess what, on Tuesday, that famous date will be 500 years ago!
Those first words of the song were followed by lines of inaccuracies, malapropisms and comedy, which remind us that it was more novelty than history. Yet, the song was responsible for putting the story of the Victory at Mactan and related events in the consciousness of generations of Filipinos.
