THE Philippines logged 5,000 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, its highest since August 2020, as the government ramped up efforts to stop the surge while downplaying the transmissibility of the local variant that was detected in Central Visayas.

The Department of Health (DoH) said the figure is also the fourth highest in terms of daily Covid infections.
