People Power prevailed in the island province of Palawan when an overwhelming majority of Palaweños rejected Republic Act11259 during the plebiscite held last weekend. The final official tally stood at 172,304 “No” votes against 122, 223 “Yes” votes – an outcome that nullified the bid to divide the country’s largest province in terms of land area into three provinces.

Under the provisions of RA 11259, Palawan’s 23 towns were supposed to become component municipalities of the following new provinces: Palawan del Norte, consisting of six towns with Taytay as its capital; Palawan Oriental, with eight towns including the capital of Roxas; and Palawan del Sur, composed of nine towns with Brooke’s Point as the capital of what was considered the mother province.
