The House of Representatives on Thursday approved House Bill 8988 authored by Parañaque City 1st District Rep. Eric Olivarez declaring Baclaran Church and its immediate environs as heritage site and tourist destination.
“The immediate environs of the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, popularly known as the Baclaran Church, located along Roxas Boulevard, Parañaque City, is hereby declared a heritage site and tourist destination. As such, the development of the immediate environs of the Baclaran Church shall be prioritized by the Department of Tourism (DoT), in coordination with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the local government of Parañaque and other concerned agencies, subject to the rules and regulations governing the development of heritage sites and tourist destinations,” Section 1 of the bill reads.
The DoT, in coordination with concerned government agencies, were mandated within a year after the approval of the bill to prepare a tourism development plan to improve the overall features of the environs surrounding Baclaran Church.
All construction, installation and maintenance must ensure the preservation and conservation of the area’s historical significance.
The DoT is also required to consult with the Parañaque city government in the promulgation of the necessary rules and regulations for the proper implementation of the law.
