As March comes to an end, let us not forget the campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2021, “Choose to Challenge.” We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Three women used YouTube as a learning tool to achieve their dreams.|

Nilda, the former cake decorator of my mom’s bakeshop, used the platform to upskill and create income opportunities. After working for many years as an employee, Nilda started her own cake and pastries shop with her savings. Her daughter, Mitchelle, who helps her mother in the business, called the shop “Mommy’s Cakes and Pastries” on its Facebook page. Capital was not an issue because customers pay a 50-percent deposit. To keep in touch with the latest cake designs, she searched YouTube video tutorials to broaden her skillsets. In the past, she relied on imported books on cake decorating, which can be expensive. Using bright pops of color in icings and topping cakes with sprinkles or sugar flowers, her cakes reached the doors of households who still want to celebrate in this time of pandemic.
