THERE are not too many constitutions, I guess, that require of their heads of government a disclosure of their state of health and a bulletin whenever he or she is taken ill. Pompidou, Mitterand and Hollande of France suffered from very serious illnesses while in office — and the public never knew.

In fact, their state of health was concealed from the public. Churchill was afflicted by so many maladies that he was dubbed “the walking textbook in medical pathology.” Ours contains the requirement: “In case of a serious illness of the president, the public shall be informed of the state of his health.”
