Tourism is one of the world’s major economic sectors – the third largest export category after fuels and chemicals – and in 2019, before the outbreak of SARS CoV-2, later to be called Covid-19, it accounted for seven percent of global trade, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Many countries depend on tourism to boost their economy, with some it can represent over 20 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP). It goes without saying, too, that tourism is one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic.
