I WAS in no rush to get vaccinated even though all talk since the beginning of 2021 had been on when the vaccine program of the Philippines would finally begin and what vaccines would be available. Western countries were already administering vaccines produced by drug manufacturers like Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson in the United States while the United Kingdom was rolling out AstraZeneca developed by Oxford University.

But in the Philippines, only a limited amount of AstraZeneca and Sinovac were being administered in the country. Sinovac was said to have only 50 percent efficacy compared to the 90 percent to 95 percent efficacy of the Western vaccines. Over TV, I heard Dr. Antonio Leachon, who was a former consultant of the Inter-Agency Task Force, say, “Why will you settle for Sinovac with 50 percent efficacy when Pfizer and Moderna have 90 percent efficacy. It’s a no-brainer! “
