“Nomadland” won a ridiculous amount of Best Picture and Best Director awards from international film festivals to the ultra-high-profile Golden Globes and Academy Awards. The win also made history as Chloe Zhao became the first Asian woman to win the Best Director Oscar. Due to some mixed-up translation for an interview she gave years ago, or perhaps what authorities perceive to be controversial about her, China decided to have a news blackout regarding her significant achievements.

The film is adapted from a 2017 book by journalist and author Jessica Bruder, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty First Century. In 2014, she wrote an article for Harper’s called “The End of Retirement” about Americans who live in their RVs, vans and cars.
