JAPAN has committed to work closely with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific amid China's massive claim in the South China Sea (SCS) as it upheld the validity of the arbitral tribunal's ruling favoring the Philippines.
Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu reiterated Tokyo's strong objection to maritime claims in the SCS that are inconsistent with the international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos).
