SEN. Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go on Wednesday called on Filipinos to strictly comply with health protocols and be vigilant against the highly contagious Delta variant of Covid-19.

"This Delta variant is really dangerous. Since there were already local cases recorded, let us not wait to have local transmissions. We do not want this to get out of control just like what is happening now in Indonesia," said Go in English and Filipino as he distributed aid to Davao City fire victims on Tuesday.

"Look at what is happening in Indonesia. Cases have increased because the Delta variant spreads very fast. It is four times more contagious - 40 to 60 percent more contagious than any other variant. Let us not be too confident. Every Filipino must observe discipline," the senator added.

The Department of Health reported on Tuesday that eight new cases of Delta variant were discovered after retesting individuals - two were returning Filipinos from overseas, one in Misamis Oriental, four in Cagayan de Oro, and a single case reported in Manila.

The senator said the country cannot afford to return to zero with tougher restrictions, as this would negatively impact the economy.

President Rodrigo Duterte agreed to put Metro Manila and surrounding provinces under regular general community quarantine until July 31.

The senator, however, emphasized that the health of Filipinos remains the government's top priority as it balances economic recovery and keeping the health care system afloat.
