A NUMBER of environmental and farmers groups denounced the approval of the commercialization of genetically modified "golden rice", raising serious concerns on its biosafety issues.

The Department of Agriculture (DA)-Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) recently announced that a biosafety permit for propagating the Golden Rice was issued, making the Philippines the world's first country to approve the commercial production of Golden Rice.
