Could that possibly have had something to do with the President's sudden "capitulation" to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin 3rd to abandon his erstwhile seemingly determined stance to abrogate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA)?

Nah, we guess not. Even before Day 1 of his presidency and over the past five years, Duterte has been talking tough about PH-US relations, particularly the presence of US troops and military bases in the country and the lousy treatment we have been getting since the US decided to colonize us at the beginning of the last century. Even during his last State of the Nation Address (SONA), he was still needling the Americans.
