Last weekend, I tried to set up a video call with my friend Bridget in New York. There I am, locked down in Manila and hungry to reach out to people, if only via a screen. I ask her if she's free Wednesday night. She says she'll be at an outdoor jazz concert featuring drummer Winand Harper at Grant's Tomb.

Another friend, Raymond, gave me a rundown of the outdoor music, dance, and poetry events that are blooming and blossoming in parks and open spaces for all of August. Central Park has a concert coming up with Jon Batiste, LL Cool J, Elvis Costello, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Cynthia Erivo, Jimmy Fallon, Jennifer Hudson, Wyclef Jean, Journey, The Killers, The New York Philharmonic, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen and Rob Thomas to name but some on the lineup.
