It has been six years since the Movement of Maritime Philippines (MMP) launched its advocacy for a more compelling government appreciation of the importance of the marine industry to this archipelago. It is not that there is no acknowledgment at all as there are various spheres of maritime activities built into the dashboard of government concerns, with seafaring obviously getting the most attention.

One concern raised by the MMP in its call for government attention to the maritime industry was the paucity of information, data, and statistics relating to this very important industry. Government policies are built on the significance and value of an industry which could only be ascertained through convincing data and statistics.
