The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) recently held a bilateral meeting to discuss possible partnerships that could benefit both countries.
These partnerships may include joint satellite research and development, joint scientific missions on space exploration, capacity-building activities, and promotion of space industry development.
The two agencies may also exchange satellite data to be used for disaster management and emergency response, and food security.
Moreover, Filipinos may also get space-related opportunities in the form of joint research and development activities, faculty and student exchange programs, internships, and academic grants.
PhilSA Director General Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano expressed optimism for a deeper diplomatic relationship between the two countries in the field of space science.
"Our countries' long-standing relation is founded by our shared values and common interests in a vast range of areas of cooperation. PhilSA is of the view that cooperation in the field of space sciences and technology is another promising endeavor our countries can pursue to further strengthen our diplomatic ties. We find this meeting a significant stride to forge synergy between our countries in this area," he explained.
Executive Director and Space Science Advisor for the UAESA Ibrahim Al Qasim praised the strong and important ties between the two countries, which were built on decades of mutual collaboration and cooperation across a wide range of strategically important industries.
"Space sector collaborations are essential for both the UAE and the Philippines. As our two countries accelerate the growth and increase investments into this exciting yet nascent industry, there will be many opportunities to collaborate and share knowledge and ideas as we work together to create new avenues for space-based innovation," he said.
Joining the bilateral meeting from PhilSA were Deputy Director General for Space Science and Technology Dr. Gay Perez, Director of Space Policy and International Cooperation Bureau Noelle Riza Castillo, Division Chief of Public Relations and Information Division Tricia Zafra, and Office of the Director General staff Leonardo Jaminola 3rd.
Meanwhile, the delegates from the UAESA were Head of Space Projects Engineer Ed Al Qasim, Head of International Organizations and Relations Abdulla Al Marar, engineer Naser Al Hammadi, and International Relations and Partnerships Senior Specialist Engineer Hasan Alshehhi.
Other attendees to the bilateral meeting were the Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana and Consul General Marford Angeles.
Quintana said the meeting will bring out shared aspirations of the countries that would be worked on with future partnerships.
