President Rodrigo Duterte downplayed the rate of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infection in the Philippines, saying the "ratio is somewhat low" in relation to the country's population.

"Today [Friday] the DoH (Department of Health) reported 17,964 new Covid-19 cases bringing the total number of active cases to 175,470. The positivity rate is at 28 percent. There are 168 reported deaths today. That is a lot. The total number of deaths is now - these are the deaths in the Philippines due to Covid-19 - 34,899. Or 1.06 percent of the total [number of] cases," Duterte said in his prerecorded public address aired on Saturday.
