TARLAC solidified its reputation as a religious province after the Diocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Merced in Barangay Matatalaib in Tarlac City was declared an "affiliate" church of St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome.
It was in July this year when the shrine started a petition that it be affiliated with the premier Marian church.
