MORE power outages are expected in Luzon in the years to come as the Philippines grapples with heavy reliance on renewable energy sources, leading to concurrent shutdowns of several base load power plants.

The Department of Energy (DoE) implemented rotational blackouts starting May to manage power demand and supply. But rotational blackouts are temporary band-aid solutions that can get worse in 2022 as aging power plants stop running and the reduction of gas plants' power rating, including shortage of gas fuel from the Malampaya fields, result to adverse power conditions and lead to an increase in consumer electricity bills mainly due to higher Wholesale Electricity Spot Market charges.
