THE countdown to the 26th international conference on climate change, or Conference of Parties (COP26) as it is also known, is well under way with less than two weeks to go before the kickoff in Glasgow. Expectations are — as always — high as the urgency is getting more acute. "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis" report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that was released in August confirmed that nations can't afford to hesitate in instituting drastic measures to slow, stop and reverse climate change. Words such as "unequivocal" and "unprecedented" describe the human-induced changes to the climate and the resulting impact on life as we know it.

Civil society groups have started campaigns to pressure governments to take action though some governments have already adopted ambitious plans to fight climate change. Ambitious and ambition actually seem to be key words with nonprofit organizations and governments talking about "accelerating the ambition loop."
