THE country can recover from the effects of the pan- demic through the "formidable tandem" of former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and outgoing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) said on Wednesday. It issued the statement a day after Duterte-Carpio confirmed that her camp had entered into an alliance with Marcos. Marcos is the PFP's standard-bearer while Duterte-Carpio will run for vice president under the Lakas-CMD (Christian Muslim Democrats) banner. The PFP said it "takes pride in the formalization of the BBM-Sara ticket for the 2022 national elections." Duterte-Carpio on Wednesday accepted the offer to serve as the chairman of the Lakas-CMD party.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte endorsed the Bong Go-Sara Duterte tandem for the May 9, 2022 national elections in a meeting with a group of lawmakers from the House of Representatives in Malacañang on Tuesday. Palace spokesman Karlo Alexei Nograles described the gathering as laid-back and informal. The meeting came after Duterte and his long-time aide Sen. Christopher Lawrence "Bong'' Go formalized their bids for senator and president, respectively, under the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS) party.

CANDIDATES in the 2022 elections should include foreign policy in their discussions and debates, the Philippine Council for Foreign Relations (PCFR) said on Wednesday. Former Interior and Local Government secretary Rafael Alunan 3rd, PCFR chairman of the board, issued the statement during an impromptu briefing with The Manila Times attended by TMT Chairman Dante Francis "Klink" Ang 2nd and PCFR board officers Alejandro Flores Jr., president, and lawyer Rafael Morales, corporate secretary. Alunan said whoever has the best and strongest influence over the Philippines "is in the best position to control events and eventually control the region."

THE Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID)has approved the proposal of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) to resume physical classes in all in all degree programs by phases, Malacañang announced on Wednesday. Palace spokesman Karlo Alexei Nograles said the IATF approved a resolution adopting the commission's proposed Phased Implementation of Limited Face-to-Face Classes for All Program. The CHEd, he added, is tasked to implement and monitor the phased implementation program for the safe reopening of colleges and universities nationwide.

WASHINGTON: Scientists say they have proven what many people fortunate enough to grow up with theirs have known all along: grandmothers have strong nurturing instincts and are hard-wired to care deeply about their grandchildren. A new study published in the Royal Society B on Tuesday is the first to provide a neural snapshot of the cherished intergenerational bond. Evidence supporting the hypothesis has been found in societies including Hadza hunter-gatherers of northern Tanzania, where grandmothers provide nourishing tubers to their grandchildren.

THE Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) will submit to President Rodrigo Duterte today (Thursday) a list of recommendations they said will help the Philippine economy recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The annual Philippine Business Conference (PBC) resolutions, which will be submitted on Thursday at the closing ceremony of the 47th PBC & Expo, include recommendations to the President to address the short-, medium- and long-term policy and program direction towards full economic recovery. The resolutions cover 10 specific areas including reopening the economy, jobs generation, internet connectivity, innovation advocacy, ease of doing business, agricultural productivity, education, environment, energy efficiency and infrastructure.

STEPHEN Curry scored 37 points, easily winning a matchup of the NBA's top two scorers when Kevin Durant had his worst night of the season, and the Golden State Warriors beat the Brooklyn Nets 117-99 on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila). Durant came in leading the league with 29.6 points per game, but he managed only 19, the first time all season he didn't hit 20. He shot 0 for 8 in the decisive third quarter and finished 6 for 19 after sitting the fourth. Curry almost caught his former teammate for the NBA scoring lead, making nine 3-pointers and raising his average to 28.7 per game. Durant dropped to 28.9. Andrew Wiggins added 19 points for the Warriors, who improved their NBA-best record to 12-2.
