Dear PAO,

My brother got married early this year. We really do not know much about his wife because she rarely went to our house or joined family gatherings, so our family try not to give our opinion whenever they have misunderstandings. Most of their arguments are about debts, which his wife incurred before and during their marriage. Since they have no ante-nuptial agreement, my parents feel that he should not be burdened by her debts especially those she has secured before they got married. What do our laws say regarding obligations of community property in situations like this?

Will

Dear Will,

When your brother entered into the contract of marriage, he not only bound himself to permanently establish a conjugal and family life with his wife but also to comply with the specific obligations set under our laws.
