NEW DELHI: Five people of a family were killed on Tuesday after a vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, officials said.

The accident took place in Govindpur area of Dhanbad district, about 161 kilometers northeast of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

"This morning, a car carrying five members of a family skidded off a road near Kaldih More and fell into a gorge about 100 feet deep," a police official at Govindpur said.

"Following the accident, all five occupants of the car — two men, two women and a child — died on the spot."

According to police, the rescuers have retrieved bodies from the gorge.

Preliminary investigations revealed the ill-fated vehicle was being rashly driven, following which the driver suddenly lost control over it.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

India's federal minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said the government has set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024.
