A few years ago, China proposed that the Australian Open, a long-time, venerable Grand Slam event, be banished and replaced by something called the Asia-Oceania Open that will be based in the pingpong-mad mainland of over a billion people.

To fans of the popular sport worldwide, the suggestion was laughable--at least to this aficionado--with China having absolutely no tennis pedigree, for one.
