WE are disappointed, but perhaps should not be surprised, that one of the very first suggested responses by government officials to the potential threat of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus is that the mandatory use of face shields should be reimposed. This universally detested and ineffective measure, used by no other country in the world, has never been an appropriate answer to the risk of coronavirus transmission, and it certainly is not now.
