THE last two weeks of December are characterized by a mass movement of people trooping back to the provinces to be with their families. It could not be the same in 2020 due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, imposed because of Covid-19. This year, however, there were reports of people scrambling for public transport to take them home to the provinces but not in the volumes seen prior to the pandemic.

The last two weeks of December are also the time when families are busy preparing for Christmas Day and getting ready to celebrate and welcome the new year. It is the time when families get together for the long-awaited reunions. It was also not the same in 2020. But this year, more people were in a celebratory mood, having been liberated from the lockdowns of varying degrees and eager to go out and celebrate.
