A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit Davao Occidental on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Tectonic in origin, the quake took place around 10:26 a.m. some 234 kilometers southeast of Balut Island, Sarangani town, also in the province.
