IN this day and age, "sustainability" is the watchword. This word underscores the realization of the need to protect the environment or to be environmentally conscious. This idea has been applied in just about every field and architecture is no exception.

In the context of architecture, sustainability is applied with the goal of minimizing the negative impact of structures on the economy. This is accomplished through improved efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, development space and the ecosystem as whole. It is not limited to merely protecting the environment, but also to ensure the health and well-being of the individual, which is provided by the environment they live in.
