WHILE women all over the world continue to be a large part of the workforce, there remain male-dominated careers and industries where numbers are changing slowly — seafaring for instance.

A recent study by the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) shows that only 1.2 percent of the global seafaring workforce are women or an estimate of 24,059 women.
