A FILIPINO bishop has officially assumed his post as head of a northern Japan diocese that covers Fukushima, which was rocked by a magnitude 9 earthquake on March 11, 2011.

Bishop Edgar Gacutan was installed as the new shepherd of the Sendai diocese in a solemn ceremony on Sunday at the Mototera Koji Church before a masked and physically-distanced crowd. The Sendai diocese covers the prefectures of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima.
